Parque is an interactive installation with an ecological message where the growth of a forest is determined by the amount of attention it receives.
By making upwards movements with their bodies, children can create new trees or grow existing ones. If a tree is left unattended for too long it will shrink and eventually disappear.
It shows children a direct relation between human action and the preservation of natural environments.
This installation was commissioned by the city of Almada to be part of a permanent exhibition at Parque da Paz, a beautiful park in Almada that now celebrates its 10th birthday. It has also been exhibited at Pavilhão do Conhecimento and Lumina – Light Festival in Sintra.

Conceptual Description:
Be Where is a surreal world which explores the possibilities and beauty of physics laws if real world limitations and restrictions are not applied.
Several behaviors are coded using the same mathematical expressions used to describe real world phenomenons but instead of restricting it self to the use of real world constants and restrictions these properties are replaced with values chosen for the aesthetic results

Technical Description:
Be Where is a visualization of the paths drawn by particles as they are influenced by several forces on a physics simulation.
As the simulation progresses over 1000 iterations a new segment is added to each particle’s path representing, through its width and color, the magnitude of the forces being applied.
The behaviors being applied are based on real world phenomenons such as flocking, hunter/prey simulations and gravitational pull and repulsion forces.
It uses the Verlet integrator for the physics calculations.
It was created using OpenFrameworks and a series of addons including ofxVectorMath, ofxRuiPhysics3d and ofxTileSaver.

Criaturas is an interactive installation where the user’s bodies are transformed in animated characters. Through their silhouettes, users create creatures which can be modeled through poses and movements. It allows the user the exploration of character and narrative creation in a playful and intuitive way.
It has been presented in two formats, with a light table where participants interact with their hands or on a bigger scale where the entire body of participants is transformed.
It has been exhibited at Restart School in Lisbon, Almada Municipal Exhibition, Technology Fair in Penafiel, Pavilhão do Conhecimento and Espaço do Tempo on Montemor-o-novo.

Worked with O Cubo in creating an interactive floor for GNR as part of the celebrations for the centenary of the portuguese republic.
It allowed the visitors to look through several historical archive images in a fun and engaging way.

The exhibition ran for 3 weeks during April at GNR’s headquarters in Largo do Carmo, Lisbon.

It was created in C++ using OpenFrameworks with OpenCV and OpenGL

On March 13th and 14th i gave a workshop at Monstra Animation Festival on creating animation using the opensource programming language Processing.
I focused on creating organic and life-like animation from simple movement to particle to particle interaction and attraction and repulsion.
It was a lot of fun!

Design and development of generative motion graphics for Optimus as part of the “Be Smart” campaign

My main goal was to have a clean and effective webpage which would still be as easy as a blog to update. So i delved into WordPress theme development and, through the articles on Themeshaper, the Ruimatic theme was born.
Lost of elements usually associated with blogs were removed such as comments, sidebar and post metadata.
A very distinctive characteristic is the ability to have post inside pages. To have a post appear in a specific page you simply have to define the post’s category to have the same name as the page. Every time you go to a specific page, Ruimatic Theme will query all posts and display all which have a category with the same name as the page. For example all posts with category “Work” will appear when you visit the Work page. It’s a very simple and effective way to filter where content will appear.
Ruimatic uses templates from the Thematic Theme (hence the name) and requires it to be present.

January 23rd and 24th i gave an OpenFrameworks Workshop in Lisbon.
It was organized by the cultural association Elemento Indesejado

From October 2008 to January 2009 i worked on Zoetrope, a multimedia concert/performance by Rui Horta and Micro Audio Waves.
I created some content for the show which includes realtime interactive animations and a generative video for the last scene. I also developed a software solution to run and control the multimedia content of each individual scene of the show. My work was developed in C++ using the amazing OpenFrameworks frameworks.
Other contents for the show also includes the amazing videos by Edgar Alberto and amazing motion graphics by Guilherme Martins.

Zoetrope premiered in January 2009 at TeCA theatre in Oporto, and has been presented in countries including Portugal, Germany, Spain and Russia.

Worked with NearInteraction in developing and designing a multitouch interface for the London College of Fashion Graduate Exhibition 2009.

Created a realtime sound visualizer for the Norwegian show producer Vuzak Media.
This software receives input from a sound source (microfone input) and creates generative graphics according to sound analysis, to be used in VJing.
It also features a graphic interface that allows to change parameters in real time that affect the look and behaviour of the animation.
It was created in C++ using the amazing OpenFrameworks library.
The graphic interface was created in Processing.

Some technical details…
The software was developed in C++ using OpenFrameworks. I designed and created a simple GUI library for increased versatility in creating the graphic interface.
Taking advantage of multicore CPU’s allows the application to run seamlessly while videos are being loaded (multithreaded loading).
Live camera input can be used and mixed or crossfaded with other videos. It can also be zoomed and panned in realtime for which i used the OpenCV library.

“Come Together” is a dance performance by Rui Horta, created for the National Ballet of Portugal.
For this performance I created a software to control and display de multimedia content, live during the show and created a generative video based on tracking the performers

Working with NearInteraction i helped developing a multitouch interface to show each of the designers collections on an interactive multitouch surface that was present at Moda Lisboa 2009
